Cover letter in support of the distribution of Digraph 3 Plus, version 3

Major changes have been introduced since the last 3.0.0.0 version of Digraph 3 Plus, which make the new produced or saved chains NO longer COMPATIBLE with the previous Digraph versions. These chains can only be read using the new Digraph versions and are recognised for the extension assigned to the filename, which is *.XSK and not *.SOK. The changes apply to all machine models.

All the new chains are created as *.XSK, while the existing chains are converted into *.XSK when they are saved for the first time and the old *.SOK file is removed. Before converting and removing the *.SOK file, a message prompts the user to confirm before continuing. If the “Save as…” function is used, only the new chain is created as *.XSK, while the old chain maintains the original *.SOK extension.

The main reasons that have led to the adoption of this new format are:

• the introduction of an “anti-hacking” protection system on the chains;
• the introduction of a system that allows Digraph to read future chains containing new information, which is currently not available, in order to expand the possibilities offered by the Digraph programming system.

NOTE

The conversion of SOK into XSK chains is a NON-REVERSIBLE process, we therefore recommend to make a complete backup of all the chains before switching to the new Digraph. This procedure is merely a precaution in the event of future use of old *.SOK chains on other computers.

Considering that the new *.XSK chains are recognised and can be viewed only by the new Digraph, the user must SIMULTANEOUSLY update all the workstations at the head office and remote locations. If any chains are supplied to contractors, they are required to update their DIGRAPH version following the procedure described above.

There is no need, however, to update the machine driver of the Digraph system.

Since nothing changes at the encoding level, there is no need to update the software installed in the machine.
